The Great Lakes flow from west to east. Over
1,300 feet deep in places, 183 miles wide,
its fresh water draining the Canadian Shield.
St. Marys Falls Canal and Soo Locks allow
ships to safely pass between Lake Superior
and Lake Huron - a 21-foot drop in elevation,
the Welland Canal connects Lakes Erie and Ontario,
a yearly transport of 40 thousand tons of cargo.
Niagara Falls spectacular splash into Lake Ontario,
the table rock erodes a few inches per year
pushing the falls a little more upriver. Then all that
water escapes through the Saint Lawrence Seaway,
tumbling over the wide and shallow, speeding up
in anticipation of meeting with the mighty Atlantic.
If you could drive a car to Mars, that's how long
it takes for the water to travel from Thunder Bay
to the coast at Sainte-Anne-des-Monts.
